The most ingrained party of the Sierra Morena Sevillana in La Puebla de los Infantes in Andalusia, was held during the first weekend of February, which hosted this year the XXII edition of the Paramotores Concentration in Las Candelas, declared a Immaterial Heritage of Andalusia, a singular event famous for the huge bonfires that are lit in different streets of the town at nightfall that illuminate the town and give name to the Las Candelas festival.
Undoubtedly, the party par excellence and with more roots is Las Candelas, the largest and longest celebration dedicated to motorized flight in Spain, held since time immemorial, in it different bonfires are organized neighborhood by all corners of the town, the popular and traditional satirical couplets ‘sandingas’ and they make ‘sopaipas’ a mass of flour, water and salt and fried in olive oil that are offered to the visitors.
This traditional event, which has been preserved for more than 150 years, is also accompanied by the Las Candelas Paramotors Concentration, which took place in a natural and privileged environment, such as The José Torán Reservoir in the Sevillian Sierra Norte, which has become a classic of the adventure of the aerial sports in all Spain and internationally that the best specialists and pilots come, national and international.
The Paramotores Concentration of Las Candelas annually opens the season of the modality and usually brings together both specialist and amateur athletes and tourists. Dozens of pilots with a motor-powered paraglider overflew the waters and adjacent terrains of the reservoir and the José Torán dam in what has become the first major European competition of this modality, which is preparing its participation in the World Championship that will will play in Thailand the first week of May.
As usual, great specialists such as the several times world champion from Granada Ramón Morillas and his teammates Víctor Rodríguez, Raúl Rodríguez, Vicente Palmero, Juan Sierra and Karen Skinner, as well as the ‘Andalusian’ Nico Aubert – who competes with the national team French- or the Japanese Emiko Morota and others great European and national specialists who will again delight the spectators who come to the field of flight.
Parallel to the concentration of pilots who have been meeting uninterruptedly for more than twenty years in “Las Candelas”, the Air Fair is held in a large tent in the José Torán reservoir, where some leading manufacturers attended to present their novelties for this year, as well as others related to trekking and adventure in general. This year they counted again with the III Handicraft and Gastronomic Fair of typical products of La Puebla de los Infantes, where the artisans of the municipality exhibited their products, throughout the weekend. The older women were responsible for preparing the “sopaipas” a dough of flour and water, cut into thin slices and fried in olive oil, accompanied with a little hot chocolate, which helps to cope with the cold winter night.
