When We Were Knights

How can you express everything that you want to somebody you love, knowing that if you don’t, that might be the last opportunity that you have? That is a reality that we all face, but for BASE jumpers, the risk of death sometimes results in something amazing and unexpected – love.

This is the real story of a pure love between two friends in the face of risk and tragedy.

We are proud to share his beautiful story here.

  134. So what happened to cause him to lose his life? Was it opening too low, or chute deployment problem? RIP

    • Hi Anson, is there a way were I can follow your work?

    • Just curious, did the lines wrapped his foot because he deployed the chute while he was backflipping? These info really helps since we can reflect them in our jumps. Thanks.

    • some people have responsibilities to other people which determine the course of their lives. tragic as this is, it doesn’t put him above others who sacrifice themselves for others.

    • +Anson Fogel Amazing work man. Best of luck to you and Matt and never stop doing these amazing things!

  150. Was the chute faulty or did he pull really late? Ian was such an awesome looking dude, really tragic. Rest in peace

    • Those spins may have taken some precious time away. Maybe he could have fixed it at another time. Dunno.

    • +ANDRUNTSIV A technical problem with the opening itself, lines wrapped around his leg. A very very rare type of malfunction, at a very unforgiving altitude – Ian calmy began fixing it but ran out of altitude.

  151. wow… thats all you can say… what a great guy. definitely going to be missed. thank you GoPro for posting this, it woudn’t get the publicity it deserves if it wasn’t up to you guys. RIP Ian

  157. Fly high Ian

  158. Absolutely amazing RIP

  159. “A lot of people will look at what we do and think that we’re chasing windmills, but that doesn’t mean we’re not knights.”

    • +AirmanCS Said it perfectly! Nice job.

    • +311i0t Like in Don Quijote – Miguel de Cervantes (that you should read it) Don quijote believed he was fighting giants when he was actually fighting some windmills.

Everyone looking at the scene (and even Don quijote knew it in some sort of way) would though he was crazy, but at the end you are what you stay true to.

If you believe you are a knight and even tho you know you are going to die if you ram against a windmill you do it because a knight would fight giants to defend everyone, doing what is true to yourself will make you what you really are, it doesn’t matter what the rest of the world sees.

    • It’s a reference to Don Quixote. The phrase “chasing windmills” is used similar to “chasing rainbows”. Basically, Matt was saying that people look at base jumpers as crazy and delusional for taking on the risk that they do, just like Don Quixote, who thought he was a knight, was delusional for attacking windmills, which he thought were giants. But even if they’re crazy, Matt and Ian still showed the bravery and comradery you’d expect from a knight.

Honestly, I’m not sure if the quote really fits. However, it has meaning on its own, even if separated from the story of Matt and Ian, and I thought it rather profound.

    • +dsty292 what does this mean?

  160. Sometimes, I wonder if YouTube hires people to dislike videos

  228. Anthony Petranich

how much is a wing suit

    • Anthony Petranich

      thanks it looks fun

    • +Anthony Petranich Wingsuits are not all that expensive – but to fly one BASE jumping will take you 4-5 years of frequent training starting with a few hundred skydives, minimum 300 before you can start to learn to fly a wingsuit out of airplanes, then another few hundred BASE jumps before you can wingsuit base without dying.

  229. was he playing nirvana right there?

  251. The guy peeing in the trash is such a douch. Does he, this little scumbag, tink one second of the person who is gonna take the bag to put another one, it’s so disrescpectful, so selfish, so dumb. Doing what you do in the sky makes certainly you cool, but certainly does not prevent you from being a useless human being otherwise. Too bad cause until this pathetic moment the video was pretty cool, won’t see the end and I don’t give a shit.

    • My dear William, I’m gonna explain you once and only my point again, hope you’ll find enough resources in your brain to finally understand : first, learn to read, I really liked the video until the pee session, including the “respectful relationship” between the guys. Second of all the “respectful relationship” between those buddies does not outweigh the respect you must have for everyone else. I love my roomate, we have an awesome relationship and share so much, now if I come and pee in front of your door, are you gonna say that you’re so much in admiration in front of this “so respectful relationship” I have with my roomate or are you gonna freak out? Being clever and empathic is being able to place yourself at the place of other people, try to feel what they could feel in some situations. Obviously you re not able to do so. You re not worth debating with so I’m gonna stop and let you think about it, hopefully you will improve yourself and it will be my personal help for you in your life. You’re welcome. No need to answer I won’t even read it. No time to waste with guys like you after I helped them. Kiss Willy.

    • +jbkamehameha While this film is primarily reminiscing the friendship and the beautiful memory that he had with Lan, the guy, you are just talking about these “disrespectful” personalities in which you think is more important than the respectful relationship between these two guys. You are being a useless human being who misses the whole point of this video. I won’t read the last sentence and I don’t give a shit.

  252. Dis be sad

  253. the start was trippy

  254. RIP lan

  255. man….wasn’t expecting to watch this when I woke up….sad.

    • +คภGєl ❤ єYєϟ and now youre being racist…what a nice person you are

    • +คภGєl ❤ єYєϟ So now the people that work at funeral parlors are bad as well? You mean the people that help organize wonderful funerals to honor someone who died, and lay them to rest? Of course those people get paid to work as well, and if they didn’t get paid they wouldn’t work, perhaps you would prefer that people don’t get a documentary made about their life and death, perhaps you prefer they don’t get a wonderful funeral, is your way of honoring them just digging a hole and tossing them in? But wait, who’s going to pay the grave digger? Oh, I guess we’ll just let them rot wherever they happen to die at the time. Despicable.

  275. now that was heavy dude. what an awesome short film. slow claps

  276. Much respect.

  277. Amazing Film

  278. Wow.. thank you for sharing these moments, amazing.

  280. wow speechless sad and amazing

  281. rip

  282. You have to admire someone who lives by THEIR own rules.

  283. Holy shit…

  284. Thanks guys for ruining my Saturday.

  285. Does anyone know what the first song is called? Can’t find it among the Kenniff songs I found. This film touched me so hard. Harsh reality with some of the extreme sports on the planet. Thanks alot for sharing this with the rest of us, please remove the GOPRO Intro thing though.

    • +Anson Fogel alright! Very well done, you really had me stuck. Big thanks for the quick reply!

    • +Fillson Anson the Director here – I mixed a fair amount of different Kenniff songs in there over on top of each other to obtain a mood – and added various things here and there so you will have a hard time finding one certain song itself – I sort of painted with his art to make my art. Strange process. But thanks for looking!

  286. shout out to all the real homie and niggas out there that are there for there bros !!!!! RIP Ian !!!! hope we all meet at the crossroads

  287. From one who loves flight to another, rip bro.

  288. king of the Bears

I like to be like you guys

  289. king of the Bears

I like to be happy ol my life

  290. Respect. R.I.P Ian

  291. RIP. It’s great to know there are people living life 100%, or close to it, true to who they are.

  292. So someone dies after constantly and consistently putting themselves in grave danger. I just hope he didn’t have a family, because living like that when you have family is incredibly selfish.

    • +highdough you called them adrenaline junkie!

    • +theazzi Alcoholism is a disease. Are you suggesting that basejumping is a disease?

Where do I draw the line? I don’t know. But basejumping is definitely on the other side. Really any activity where there’s a 1 in 60 chance you’ll die is pretty much out.

    • +highdough btw let’s say my dad died when I was ten for something even more selfish then base…say alcholism, I think that I would never blame him, but reather try to be compassionate and forgive him for his mistake, givin shit to him I think would be quite selfish superficial and cruel…always too easy to judge hard…

let me ask you, how you draw the line between dangerous activity that you still approve and those that aren’t…what’s the highest rate of casuality that you can still deal with?

    • +highdough hope that you are not goin to die of a slow paintful death…because that will affect your loved way worst then a quick one;) Peace!

    • +yakumo961 You’re still not getting it, are you? Yes, you could die crossing the street, but if you get your kicks crossing the street blindfolded, then not only are your chances of dying increased dramatically, but you’re an idiot and apparently don’t give a damn about what your loved ones will go through when you die tragically.

As I said, it’s exactly like the quote, “It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.”

You guys like the sport so much you’ll do anything to convince yourself that the participation of it isn’t hurting anyone.

  293. “When we were alive”

  294. sorry for your loss brother

  295. This is beautiful. RIP Ian.

  296. this made me rethink my life so much thinking are my friends as good as these two guys

  298. This is so powerful it made me cry. Thank you for sharing the story.

  299. Very touching tribute to his friend.

  300. Intense…. Triste

  301. I admire people who live life they way they want no matter what. I am glad these two friends expressed their feelings for each other openly. Most people never say how they feel about someone until it’s too late. Tell the people you care about that you love them.

  302. LyfeOfAJavaDevWith Frank

This is a very smart man.

  303. LyfeOfAJavaDevWith Frank

    stop the bullshit omg

  328. That was beautiful ;-;

  329. This was an amazingly beautiful story. I am a bit confused about how he died – if they had chutes on? He passed out on the way down? It seems too high to be planning on hitting the water without a chute, isn’t it? But yes, we should all live our lives like we will never see the people we love again. Not hold back. Ian in a can. Awesome Pure Love.

  330. My best friend recently passed at age 20 about 1 month ago. He also said “I love you bro” anytime I made him laugh or say something so weird he just didn’t know what else to say. That struck a chord with me when he mentioned their last opportunity you can have could be at any moment. I have a little feeling my friend knew that too. Rest in Paradise Jeff <3 Hope Ian's family is well. God bless.

  420. saddest thing ever????????????????????RIP

  421. wow… simply wow. 🙁 very very very powerfull stuff

  422. It’s just my allergies acting up….. I swear

  423. I’m sorry but the narration, or letters being read, completely ruin the flying experience. *Flying is about being in the moment.* To ponder thoughts like this while flying is completely incongruent with the awe inspiring experience of flying. I guess that’s how people can dislike this.

    • ah well, each to their own i guess

    • +MrFreaky
Of course. It’s still terribly distracting and pulls me out of the experience of what it’s like to be flying down that mountain. I would have edited so the person reading the letter is just BEFORE the jump and descent, not during.

    • you know the narration audio is pre-recorded and then put over the flying clips right? it’s not actually him talking whilst he’s flying down the mountain???

  424. That genuinely made me cry

  425. This video should be the most liked and visited Gopro’s video

  426. Song at the end is “Closing – Keith Kenniff”

Didn’t say the track in the video or in the description.

  427. Can anyone tell me the name of the music at the end. Thanks in advance.

  428. God damn

  429. I watch this video every now and then just to ground me as I pursue for risk and adventure.

  430. Fly Free Ian.
