How to Choose your first Paraglider

The choice of a paraglider should be made after an objective and humble analysis of our capabilities, but also of our objectives. How we fly and how we want to fly.

Paragliders are tools, they are homologated, and they are classified into different categories, depending on the reactions they have in different flight configurations, and it is advised for which type of pilots they are directed. Each category is designed for a specific function: the EN A class to learn and progress; the EN B class easy to progress and make the first flights away; the class EN B high for expert pilots, or to start in the competition; the EN C class to fly away or compete; the EN D class for high competition or distance flights.

Knowing what category the wing we need is already has a long way to go.

PARAGLIDERS CLASS EN A

They are easy to pilot and very safe paragliders, suitable for all types of pilots, especially beginners, school students and occasional pilots. Ideal to learn in school and to progress after the courses, during the first years. That does not mean that it can only be flown by students, or that it only serves to teach flying.

The modern class A gliders have great features and maneuverability that make them ideal to be your first paraglider, which will allow you to progress safely, making mistakes at the beginning, but without serious consequences.

PARAGLIDERS CLASS EN B EASY

They are the most popular because they present almost the safety of the basics, although they are a little more difficult to drive and guide than class A, these paragliders B are suitable as a first paraglider, for those beginners who have finished the courses and have good skills of flight, to progress in the first years of flight, if the beginner pilot has as final goal the distance flight or competition.

The benefits in flight of this type of wings improve a little bit also compared to the class A models, although it must be said that there is … you can find class B paragliders “malotes” that fly worse than some “good” class A … In any case, do not expect to find abysmal differences between both models.

PARAGLIDERS CLASS EN B HIGH

They are very desirable paragliders and with very good acceptance among the pilots who offer a higher performance in terms of glide and speed, but they may not be what an unambitious flyer needs or that flies few hours a year in thermal conditions, since they require of a different attitude of your pilot both to resolve incidents and to avoid them while navigating.

This class of paragliders is not recommended for beginners, nor of course as the first paraglider, most manufacturers recommend this category of paragliders for experienced pilots.

PARAGLIDERS CLASS EN C

They are Paragliders to make distance flights of performance and competitions at amateur level, destined to expert pilots, with experience in thermal flight and turbulent conditions, that fly in a habitual and constant way, because they are demanding to pilot and sensitive to pilot errors .

PARAGLIDERS CLASS EN D

These are the most difficult to pilot paragliders, for very expert pilots, active and competitors, because they do not forgive mistakes and need precise actions of the pilot to correct incidents in flight.

WHICH ONE TO CHOOSE?

Of course, class C and D gliders fly more and better than class A and B class. That’s clear, but the theme of your first paraglider is about safety, not about performance. In no case we would recommend as a first paraglider a high class B, in many occasions, not even as a second paraglider. Sometimes, I could recommend an easy B class, if the pilot has good qualities. But our recommendation is that a beginner pilot should choose a class A glider as the first paraglider.

However, each one must make their own personal choices, and therefore we gave you everything necessary for a well-informed decision.

To choose the most appropriate Paraglider for you, you must be honest with yourself, and think what kind of flight you would like to do and where do you want to get in this paragliding? What type of pilot do you want to be, casual or dedicated? Are you a good pilot? Would you like to fly away or compete in the future?

Surely if you answer these questions with sincerity and without pressure, you know what type of wing you want to start flying.
