Considering all the POTENTIAL hazards of this endeavor, I supposed free falling with a shotgun with the action closed and not SHOWN to be empty is not such a big deal. We assume you emptied it and cleared it before you chunked it to the ground from 100 feet up……..right?
+Rcbif The 870 Express holds 4 rounds in the mag,.He appears to start with an empty chamber and the video depicts him firing 5 rounds total. There is a lot of editing so we must assume he loaded more rounds in at some point. After severing the main balloons with a shot, it appears there is a round left in the mag tube. It does not appear that he racked the slide again before free fall. No way to tell for sure from the edited version.
Seeing as it’s a pump action shotgun, the last shot was used to cut him free of the balloons, and he had no reason to rack the shotgun while skydiving, yes, I’d say it’s safe.

The whole premise of the shotgun was idiotic. A long sharp stick would have been a safer, more reliable tool. But he obviously didn’t need to pop balloons in the first place – most of them floated away intact as the video shows. He could have just unbuckled the chair.

Quite obvious he has extremely little firearms knowledge, waving the thing around grabasstically, resting with his finger ON the trigger, doesn’t even know whether a round is chambered, doesn’t consider that going up to 8k ft he might need to secure the weapon to himself so that he doesn’t drop it on the ascent, or foolishly and recklessly toss it toward the ground as he’s about to land. Given his previous handling of the weapon, did he even make sure it was clear of rounds before he let it fall to the ground from 20 or more feet? I think an example of how NOT to do it.

+vTrioh Okay, if he were perfectly balanced in a special harness that allowed for flips, like the ones they film The Matrix style stunts on, perhaps the 20-or-so ft/lbs of energy in a shotgun recoil might cause him to do one backwards rotation, but parachute harnesses aren’t designed to let the user turn upside down, for obvious reasons. The force that would be required to flip a person suspended from a parachute harness would be FAR more than any hand held weapon could generate, even a .50BMG. Part of the problem is that the person in the harness, while strapped in around their waist and between their legs, is suspended from the rigging at a point more or less at their shoulders, so they would have to fire the gun from their feet, and then spin their entire body up around the point of suspension. Not gonna happen.
Lol how is it impossible? think about it if you have a shotgun that has enough recoil and you’re in the sky and falling you’re telling me that if you shoot it then the force of the recoil won’t make you fly backwards but with no where to land you’ll just do a back flip.

If he goes much higher the sun’s heat will expand the gallons and they pop. About the only thing I can think that would do him in is that a private airplane runs into him and… What a Head Case !

There are a lot kinds of pellets for shotgun. For close range hunting they are spreading from the first meter. Just learn first and then try to be honest.

At 2:43 you see the Green Bag with four wires floating loose from the Chair and the four Main Ropes still attached to the Balloons . That Green Bag seems to be the Rip Cord ! I think he ran out of Ammo and had to resort to “Plan B” . Great Video Great Fun !

The corners of the chair support obviously had a jettison system using a three ring system, the same system that is used to jettison a main parachute in case of opening failure when skydiving. You can seen the green pull bag in the center of the lawn chair a 1:09 and clearly at 1:58. Id would obviously enable a clean separation, just as was seen in the video. Obviously not a single thing was cut, so why would you make such a claim?
Why balloons? Why not. Just something different to react or pay homage to Larry Walters from back in 1982. A shotgun was just a different element to the pellet gun that Walters used, especially considering these new balloons might be less susceptible to projectile damage, so something with more force would be needed.
your observational and critical thinking skills should be more of a personal concern to you than your time, which you chose to use to watch and comment upon videos, being “wasted”.

The scary part is that shotgun could have easily gone off when he deployed his chute and jerked upwards. I know someone who dropped their shotgun out of a tree stand while hunting with friends and it fell on the stock and fired from the ground directly at his face and killed him.

The pellets reach a terminal velocity which is non-lethal.
This was likely bird shot, hundreds of pellets instead of 8-9 00 buck, each individual pellet had little mass, so even at terminal velocity I doubt it would hurt,
Shotgun pellets slow down a lot compared to other projectile weapons, there are videos of people in the middle east shooting guns in the air and getting hit with falling bullets.

I don’t think you understand. If you look closely at 2:43 when he first starts to fall you can see that his chair disconnects from the harness holding him to the balloons. In the same scene you can also see that he does not have his finger on the trigger. This is because he did not shoot the shotgun before he started to fall, he simply pulled a release. He did not need the gun to pull the release and come down.
So that his chair would come down

How interesting! I noticed where Erik is flying. He is right in the flight path of airplanes landing at Salt Lake International airport. I fly right there all the time. You can see Utah Lake in the background. He is about 5 miles to the south of the Class B airspace but at about the same altitude as the jets coming in to land. Interesting! He is not in airspace that could get him in trouble but is right were the jets are flying through. I wonder if this has been talked about much in the comments?

I thought the point was to shoot the balloons until he started to slowly descend… The more I think about it the more I realize that indeed that was the point and the experiment was a complete bust and instead of him coming down slowly, he got trigger happy and ended up shooting through the ropes holding the chair to the balloons. He wasn’t very bright. Obviously he would have a parachute for safety but the idea was to go up and come down by shooting a few balloons at a time. What do you do with the balloons up in the air now?

Most scenarios where people are actually injured or killed by “falling bullets” isn’t actually a falling bullet, but bullets fired from a gun at an angle, so its still carrying some momentum from the shot, not just its terminal velocity.
And as many have already said, shot isn’t harmful falling from the air, maybe if you catch one right in the eye, but pretty much anything hurts if you take it right in the eye.
It’s very common to be “bb rained” while hunting it hurts no more than a airsoft gun

If he still had any ammunition left in the magazine tube it still wouldn’t matter, and he wouldn’t need to clear the gun. It’s not semi-automatic, so the shell left in the chamber would still be the previously fired shell, unless he manually cocked the gun again to chamber another round as he fell.
I agree though, I would have preferred for him to use a pouch of sorts to secure the gun for landing, mostly because where I come from, no good guns are cheap and I’d really love a shotgun like that one.
Chill Sessions I never saw him clear it after the shot that caused him to start falling, but maybe it was edited out. I wondered the same thing, because it would likely have discharged upon impact if there had been a shell chambered. Wonder why he didn’t just use a sling to eliminate the risk of dropping it and then he wouldn’t had to throw it on the descent.

I call fake. Yes he actually rode it up and skydived down. However, that Remington 870 only holds 4 in the tube. When he attempted to fire, failed and cycled…a shell would have fallen out, but one didn’t. Evidence of an empty chamber…(probably for safety). So there is four in the gun. You hear 5 bangs over non-continuous footage. He could have reloaded or had extra shells in his pocket…but I didn’t see where he would have stored them. Keeping in mind the parachute harness would make them hard to get to and shifting weight on the chair could be dangerous. I find the editing and switching of cameras suspect. I think he fired all four shells. Nothing happened, so he pulled an emergency quick release with sound effects from the previous shots. Evidence of this is at 2:42 his trigger hand is no where near the gun. Which he isn’t aiming upwards…just holding beside him. He isn’t even looking up. Generally you look where you shoot. So what I think happened was the fourth shot failed to send him falling. So he pulls a handle on the opposite side…edited to sound like a fifth shotgun blast…and the last evidence is the four point release disconnecting from all four corners of the chair instead of being blasted away at the apex. Still a cool video, but I believe there was some foul play here to make it not seem like a wasted balloon ride.
Yep. Definitely some “creative” editing to make it look and sound like the last shot took it down. But also notice that the balloons separated from the chair by the ropes being released. Don’t know why they felt the need to deceive and fake it here. Add to that: not using a lanyard for the shotgun, finger in the trigger, etc. I mean really you are going to hold onto a shotgun while using both hands for the parachute? The dumb factor is high in this video.
