From the beginning of humanity, human beings have been obsessed with the possibility of flying. Mythology tells us that our ancestors sought inspiration by looking at the birds. Horacio Llorens, the Spanish legend of paragliding, had always dreamed of flying with a flock of birds. A dream that he has maintained for 17 years, from the first moment he began to fly in paramotor.

No human being has ever been able to fly with a flock of birds. Opportunities for this are very rare, but in Denmark there is a phenomenon called “Black Sun” or “Sort Sol” according to the natives. This event gave the possibility to the five-time champion of the world of acrobatic paragliding to reach a goal that took half a lifetime to pursue.

The synchronized flight of a huge flock of starlings is one of the spectacles of nature that best reflects the coordination between the members of an animal species. As if they had been trained to star in an air parade, not only do they fly with an impeccable organization, but they even draw figures that are perfectly delineated in the sky.

“Being a bird is a dream. That’s why I paraglide, in those moments I feel like a bird.” Horacio Llorens

During the winter, thousands and thousands of starlings migrate from Norway to the more temperate climate of Tøndermarsken in southern Denmark, as well as other Baltic nations. The Black Sun is a show in which these birds, when flying together, darken the sky. The effect is simply fascinating.

Llorens used a paraglider powered by electric power, which allowed him to fly along with the starlings and become one of the flock. “Normally you can fly close to three or four birds but being able to do it with thousands is a unique opportunity.”

“I do not want to bother the birds, I just want to fly with them and feel part of the flock. You know, for a moment I try to be a bird more, even if it’s only a few seconds. In the air there was a great sense of complicity. I think once they realized that it was not a predator the starlings enjoyed the fact that I flew with them” explained Llorens.

Llorens had permission from the Danish Ministry of the Environment to fly along with the starlings. Frands Sorberra, one of the best ornithologists of that country, was present to verify that all the necessary measures had been taken. The main objective was the care of the birds.
