Do you think that BASE jumping or Skydiving are the most dangerous extreme sports? Of course jumping from high points with an elastic rope tied on your leg or jumping in the sky from an airplane and then safely landing using a parachute scares many people and it’s properly considered dangerous. But among the most dangerous is to mention wingsuit flying. It’s a sport where the athletes fly through the air using a wingsuit which adds surface area to the human body to enable a significant increase in lift. The wingsuit flight ends usually with the deployment of a parachute. So we can say that the ancient dream of Icaro to fly using artificial wings, came true. What makes this kind of extrem sport very dangerous is the fact that the athlethes fly at very high speed ( over 100km/h) and it leads to difficulties in taking control of the directions, above when there are some natural or artificial obstacles that must be avoided.
Watching this compilation you’ll understand why you have to consider wingsuit flying as one of the most dangerous extreme sports. The video starts showing some winguit athlethes who jump from a very high mountain, fall down and then fly normally through other mountains and then we can see other kind of jumps, from an helicopter, from an airplane and other exit points. Some of the athletes shown in the video are girls. As mentioned before there aren’t only natural obstacles like mountains but also artificial ones like skyscrapers.Indeed many athlethes decide to fly above the cities and through the tallest skyscrapers. In the video we can see some of them flying through Dubai’s buildings. One thing that makes the wingsuit flying more challenging is proximity. It means that the athletes fly very near to the obstacles or fly through them in a tiny space.
The second half of the video is a tribute to the wingsuit athletes that died while performing. The first one to appear on the video is Ludovic Woerth (1979-2014) french wingsuit jumper that died in Switzerland apparently because misread the contours of the land. The second one is Dean Potter (1972-2015) died while trying a proximity wingsuit flight from Taft Point above Yosemite Valley. Also the world record setter Jhonathan Florez died in Switzerland during a training session. The next one is Uli Emanuele (1986-2016), an italian professional wingsuit jumper died again in Switzerland. Alexander Polli (1985-2016), died in France hitting a tree. And the last one Graham Dickinson ( 1988-2017) died in China last year.
